Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India has witnessed significant evolution!
The government's promotion of a cashless economy, coupled with the introduction of digital payment platforms like UPI, BHIM & Paytm has spurred the rise of digital payments in India. UPI, known for its user-friendly interface and instant money transfers, has been a significant catalyst. The COVID-19 pandemic has further hastened the shift towards digital payments due to the emphasis on social distancing and reduced cash handling.
Data we found 🧐
" UPI accounts for over 75 percent of all retail digital transactions in India. It has around 330 million unique users. Over 70 million merchants actively utilise UPI, using 256 million QR codes.
In FY22, UPI accounted for 52 percent of the total 8,840 crore financial digital transactions with a total value of Rs 126 lakh crore. On average, between FY19-22 (calendar year), UPI transactions grew 121 percent in terms of value and 115 percent in terms of volume, the survey noted. In December 2022, UPI touched its highest-ever mark with 782 crore transactions worth Rs 12.8 lakh crore, according to the Economic Survey.
The Economic Survey further noted that UPI has processed 2,922 crore contactless merchants’ transactions with a total value of over Rs 21.7 lakh crore in the first nine months of FY23 (2022-23) "

How does old Sangam Payment Screen look?
Looking at the old design, it lacks the intuitive appeal seen in modern, trending apps. Additionally, users feel a lack of trust in the platform while doing payment. Simplifying the options, revamping the design to streamline the selection process & enhance user experience is a priority. In order to understand what other apps are doing we did benchmarking of frequently used top trending apps like zomato, swiggy, Myntra, Amazon & BlinkIt.
Design Decisions
Upon analyzing data and benchmarking popular apps such as Swiggy, Zomato, Blink It & Amazon a key observation emerged: there is a need to enhance the user experience. Specifically, we identified that enlarging the UPI buttons for easier tapping and merging the debit & credit sections would not only optimize usability but also result in significant space savings within the UI. Below are the visuals of the design changes that were implemented.
Before
UPI buttons were too small & doesn’t look tapeable
After
UPI buttons made bigger so that it grabs users attention & are easy to tap.
Before
Credit & Debit card section was separate.
After
Merged Credit & Debit card section so that it takes less UI space & made UPI as the 1st priority
